New Report Highlights Negative Impact of Debt on Graduate Enrollment in STEM for Latino Students

Latina and Latino Students in STEM

The Center for Urban Education's new report "Reducing Undergraduate Debt to Increase Latina and Latino Participation in STEM Professions" examines the borrowing patterns of undergraduate students and the relation of that debt to enrollment in graduate school. Underrepresented students, particularly Latino students, borrow at higher rates to pay for undergraduate degrees, which limits their ability to invest in graduate and professional schools. Controlling undergraduate debt through financial aid policy can increase the number of Latino students who become scientists, engineers, and mathematicians by enabling them to continue to invest in their education beyond the bachelor’s degree.

Implementing the Equity Scorecard in Theory and Practice

In a new book, "Confronting Equity Issues on Campus: Implementing the Equity Scorecard in Theory and Practice," co-editors Estela Mara Bensimon and Lindsey Malcom discuss the theory behind the Equity Scorecard™, an organizational learning and change model designed to assist colleges in creating equitable outcomes for underserved student populations. The Equity Scorecard™ process involves the formation of institutional evidence teams that look at disaggregated student performance data, examine classroom and campus practices, and use the results to develop interventions that will improve outcomes for minority students.

Through CUE's signature Equity Scorecard™ process, researchers will assist the PASSHE universities in developing equity indicators and benchmark goals that will help them increase access and graduation rates for historically underserved student populations.

According to PASSHE's leadership, the partnership with CUE represents a key strategy to achieve performance goals in student access and success under the system's performance-based funding program. Learn more.
