Ana Mercado is a rising Junior,double-majoring in Sociology and Contemporary Latino and Latin American Studies and minoring in Forensics and Criminality. She is a first generation, low-income Latina originally from Watts, Los Angeles. She places great value in family and as first in her family to attend college she strives to uplift herself and also set the best example for her 5 younger siblings. Ana has a great passion for education; she is also passionate about embodying the Trojan spirit and advocating for the social issues that are dear to her heart. She is currently a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band and loves cheering the TEAM to victory alongside of her color guard teammates. When she is not out in the field, she is serving as President for Improving Dreams, Education, Access and Success (IDEAS) at USC. IDEAS is an organization established to support and offer resources for undocumented students in their pursuit and completion of higher education at USC. Ana is invested in ensuring that undocumented students are equipped with the resources necessary for their college success. She is currently working with university allies and other undocumented students to establish a program or center that can better serve the needs of these students. She envisions herself establishing a non-profit organization focused around working with low-income, first generation undocumented students in higher education. She believes that education has no borders and that opportunities for success should not be limited by one’s status. As she continues to thrive in her journey as an undergraduate and as a student worker at CUE, she is excited to see what the future has in store for her.
